RE: Lone Writers Lists
what is a 'lone writer' ?
I hope it's not as simple as the name suggests, otherwise I've just asked a
dumb question (would that make me a dumb writer?). ;-)
Who on the list wants to break the bad news...
A dumb question always deserves a good answer.
A lone write is any tech writer who works without other writers around. You might be the only tech writer in a small company, or the only writer in a given group within a huge company.
I have worked as a "lone writer" in companies as small as 20 employees, and as large as the one I am at now: Merck Phamaceuticals.
Generally, a lone writer has no editor, except for whatever developer thinks he or she knows more about writing than you do. If you are lucky, you have the latest version of Word to work with. Some lone tech writers actually get to choose their own tools; others get whatever they can whereever they can, because the developers needed the software budget for the lastest WhizBang release.
I've heard that some lone tech writers even get respect. Others are simply considered a glorified typist.
Hope this helps.
