I'm seeing lots of good questions on this thread. I hope those who are interviewing
or hoping to soon are making a list of the questions they might want to use.
Another use for questions is to deflect an uncomfortable question. The most obvious
example is the dreaded salary question.
Interviewer: "What salary are you looking for?" or
"What salary are you currently making?" or some other variation.
Answer: "What is the salary range for the position you are offering?"
It's a legitimate question on the interviewer's part, and it is also a legitimate
tactic on your part. Remember: whoever mentions money first, loses the money
negotiation.
Okay, when they tell you the range--and in my experience they invariably will--you
can either say that it is in the range of what you are looking for or it is not. OR
you can suggest that you are interested in the total package. (Keep in mind that if
the range is way low for what you are expecting, it's a good time to terminate
things gracefully for all concerned. "I guess I misunderstood the type of skills you
were looking for. Thank you for your time.")
