TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
In my case, it's self-assigned. I'm a contractor/consultant (and, yes,
sometimes it does feel like I'm peddling snake oil!), and I wanted more
money. Looked at what I'd done, decided I warranted senior status. Sometimes
I'm a Lead Technical Writer, sometimes I'm a Senior Technical Writer, and
sometimes I'm a Consultant. Whatever pays me the most.
Right now, I'm just an "ordinary" tech writer. The rate sucks, but it beats
the hell outta no rate, and I'm getting to learn another tool, do something
I've not done before, and it keeps my skills honed until the economy gets
better.
The color of money is green, and I'm not asked to do anything dishonest or
unethical. Or stupid, for that matter.

Subject: senior writer promotion
I could not find any info in the 2001/2002 archives on this, so I am
posting this.
Can writers with the title "senior writer" give details about how they
received this title?
What were the qualifications used to grant you this title?
Did you have to pass some exam, or was your performance rated against
established parameters?
Did you have to be a writer for X number of years?
Was it just a title promotion?
or
Did you receive a salary increase, and if yes, what percentage?
