That's why I like email so much. Though not actual contract
documents, the email record of, "This is what I'll do for this
much money." and "That sounds OK. Go ahead." eliminates your
he-said/she-said concerns. Even a verbal agreement should be
followed up with a, "Just want to clarify what we said at our
meeting." email message. Then wait for the acknowledging reply
before beginning work.
This worked well for me in my last job. It reined in a client who
asked insistently for tasks that "she had presumed" were
included, but were explicitly excluded in the e-notes. We got
along much better for the balance of the work :-}
