It sounds like the sales guy is trying to say that in addition to the
technology being state-of-the-art, it's also one that's being used by the
other cutting-edge companies, the implication being that your technology
can play nicely with the Big Dogs. Otherwise some might assume your
technology is so radical that nothing else will be able to interact with
it (if that's applicable given your product/s).
I agree that "mainstream" is not the best choice. A rewrite and/or a
different adjective that implies a more elite status would be better.
