Re: Do choosy mother mothers choose GIF?
I see there's already been a bunch of answers to this, but FWIW, I've
heard that you should use the soft "G" because it's followed by an "I."
Your name doesn't show it, but you must be Italian! And I bet you've never bee given a Gideon Bible as a gift - it'd have you made giddy. ;-)
But seriously, logic is no suitable tool to deduce the pronounciation of English (especially AE) words - those are two different worlds. It is only convention that counts, i.e., what is used most is eventually declared 'correct' (or two dialects result - you say "eether", I say "iither").
Therefore, I now declare the opening of the great graphic format pronounciation wars (everybody's tired of Word vs. FrameMaker, QuarkXPress vs. InDesign or Mac vs. Windows anyway):Ladies and gentlemen, pick a pronounciation and take your sides. And may the most chatty ones win!
