Not to sound elitist, but I think we need to remember that the vast majority of the world's population operates at a less than fourth grade education level. The warnings that were posted on this site were not written for you, or your friends, or co-workers (the educated working class). They were written for the uneducated masses.

The problem with this argument is that these silly warnings are, by and large, not written for "the vast majority of the world's population". They are written for the US (and possibly Canadian) population. In most other countries you won't find warnings that a network router should not be used in the bathroom, or that coffee may be hot. (Both real examples.)

I find it hardly credible that, to take one famous example, a woman buying coffee at McDonalds really didn't expect it to be hot. It seems more likely that the problem is not lack of education but sheer greed: There seems to be a strong tendency among Americans to view each personal misfortune as an opportunity to extort money from someone else (sorry: to sue someone for deserved compensation).

If you are living in the US, you may regard this as natural. But most of the world works differently and consequently can do without such over-the-top warnings.

Regards
Jan Henning
