TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I use Jasc PaintShop Pro to prototype all my web app screens. I keep
different things (screen background, different buttons or menus) in
separate files and just copy them into whatever screen I'm mocking up.
If I'm really disciplined I use layers so that I can easily add, move
and remove elements. I can also use vector layers to keep button and
label text separated so that it's easily changed.
Most recently I've used this to create a mock-up of a change request
from an external customer. "I really want to know how you did that," he
said. "A girl has to have some secrets," I replied. I think we're
getting the contract.
I've used Visio in the past but it's a bit to rigid and clunky for me,
even for Windows interfaces.
