Re: STC Letter to the Editor
Given the admission of this inability to assess technical accuracy, I do not
understand how the STC can get away with holding "technical communication"
competitions and have folks take them seriously.
I'm not sure that anybody outside the STC does take them seriously.
I don't say this to bash the STC, but simply because most people outside the STC haven't heard of the organization. Those who have heard of it probably don't know much about it (and why should they? Many of them are not writers), so can't judge what an award means. The average HR clerk must only have a sense of a vaguely impressive accomplishment.
Another problem is that the more competitions there are, the less winning means. Even if the majority of STC chapters do not hold competitions, there must be a dozen or more regional competitions yearly. In this crowd, winning an award is analogous to being on one of the dozens of best-seller lists as a novelist: winning a regional competition may be something to be pleased or proud about, but the accomplishment is diminished by the number of other winners.
