If the STC had a contest to write documentation
about ONE product (say an open source product
poorly documented) and then judge the entries,
THAT would do a whole bunch of good to everyone.
The open source product would get documented,
evaluated, examined, and thoroughly wrung out
by the various TW's.
Differences between documentation approaches
for the same product could be compared on truly
technical aspects. For docs with similar level
of technical merit, presentation could be judged
as a separate award.
The judges would have to learn the product, but
once they have, it would be easier to evaluate
subsequent entries, and they learn something new.
Publication of winning and losing entries
would serve to educate everyone interested in
different approaches to docs to enhance the skills
of technical communicators.
This would be an award worthy of winning.
