Here are the two alternatives I would suggest (assuming the higher characters come across):
Français French
Deutch German
The suggestion could be further improved by substituting "Deutsch" for "Deutch" ;-)
A way around this whole mess is, of course, to use flags instead of words. Although you risk offending the Canadians, the British, the Irish, most of the Swiss, half of the Belgians, the Austrian and probably a few assorted other peoples if you just present the flag of the dominant country for each language.
