The lead editorial in the November 2002 issue of
*Technical Communication: Journal of the the Society
for Technical Communication* was written by George Hayhoe,
Editor.

I quote 2 small snippets:

"I think that the perfect final examination in an information
design course would be to pose a communication task, provide
sources of information, and then challenge the students to
to convey the message effectively using only 10-point Courier
type and essential graphics to support that message."

"No matter how skilled we are at making documents look
beautiful, if they lack the information the audience needs or
don't present the information in a way that the audience can
grasp readily, our documents fail to communicate and might as
well consist of nonsense words."

<end quotes>
