Shouldn't that depend on whether you're talking about a kind of entity versus a named entity. For example, use the Board if you're wanting to refer to it as though you are abbreviating the name "Board of Directors," but refer to it as the board if you are just talking about the Board of Directors as a generic entity. Same thing with mission statment.
