To all you Austinites: I was laid off last May after three years in the
Austin software industry. For three months, I pounded the pavement, worked
the networking, cold-called, monitored job sites, and publicized my web-site
and resume everywhere. I was 'this' close to walking through the mall
parking lot, jamming copies of my resume and business card under every car's
windshield wiper.
But what I did notice during my searching, was a scattering of jobs in
Houston. Full-time. Paying good money. Looking for people who had skills
just like mine. But dang. I lived in Austin.
In August, I accepted a great gig at a profitable public software company in
Houston. I found the cheapest apartment I could find ($315/month for
350sqft). Monday through Friday, I live here. Back home to my wife and
beagles. Do I hate this? Well, not as much as not working. I assured my wife
that I would monitor the Austin job market, and would move back at soon as
the market turns back. So far, I haven't seen anything in Austin. Anything.
But, I continue to see more and more tech writing gigs in Houston. It's only
a 2.5 hour commute each way. So, if you haven't thought about it yet, check
it out.
