Re: Technical meaning for autonomous?
Does anyone use the word "autonomous" in any computer-related sense?
According to Atomica (a wonderful little program I couldn't live without), this word has Greek origins, Auto + nomos (law). So, it literally means self-lawed or self-governed. It's definition is: "Not controlled by others or by outside forces; independent: an autonomous judiciary; an autonomous division of a corporate conglomerate."
Would I ever use this to describe a computing process? Not likely. No computer runs by itself without someone at least telling it to start.
