Subject:FrameMaker Vs Word From:Suraj Jayan <surajjayantech -at- yahoo -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Thu, 14 Nov 2002 22:42:04 -0800 (PST)
Hi All,
I am faced with an issue in my company regarding
whether Word or FrameMaker is better for documentation
of user manuals for the company products.
The documentation produced is usually long and runs to
a minimum of 100 pages for each product. The issues
are as follows:
1) The company is following a cost cutting measure
and as a result, they have pointed out that FrameMaker
licenses have to be paid more for, when compared to
Word licenses.
2) The company also points out the ease of Word usage
and the familiarity it has with the Subject Matter
Experts who provide the inputs for the Technical
Writers. So, the question is why have two tools when
the cheaper tool can be used for providing both the
inputs as well as publishing the document in print.
3) The cream among the company comments regarding this
issue is the following: "Why buy a 60 inch TV when U
can watch comfortably in a 21 inch one!!" Guess the
thought in their minds is more clear with this
statement!!
I am told to give a presentation next week from a
Technical Writer's point of view to convince the Top
Guns as to why I prefer FrameMaker as a Technical
Writer
Though I am aware that FrameMaker has its definite
advantages over Word when scripting long documents,
all other valuable inputs from each one of you would
be appreciated in this "Fight For Frame" presentation.
Thanks and best regards,
Suraj
