"now I wonder if it's possible to paste a TOC into another document without
getting the error."
Unless I'm totally misremembering, I'm sure I do this often, without
unlinking the field first, just using ordinary copy-and-paste. However,
after pasting the ToC into the other doc, I must select it and press
CTRL+SHIFT+F9 to unlink it. The second step is essential.
