A product is also an application.

Not neccessarily. "Application" is, in modern parlance, largely synonymous with "software program". Usually this indicates a program that can somehow be used to create content or that can perform a wide (whatever that means in the context) variety of tasks. (By contrast, programs that can perform only one limited task - or a few of them - are more likely to be called utilities.)

A product is something that you sell. In many cases the application is also more or less the product. But in other cases, the product is clearly different from the application. Microsoft Office is a good example: The product is Microsoft Office, but that clearly is not an application. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are applications, but they are not, if acquired as part of Office, products*.

Regards
Jan Henning

* Leaving aside for the moment the fact that these three applications are also available as individual products.
