I'd suggest getting up to speed on an open source project, make some
serious contributions, and see how it goes. If it works (i.e., you learn
fast enough, code well enough, and contribute significantly) you'll have
learned valuable information about a software development project, you'll
have code samples (and a project) to show prospective employers, and
you'll really know whether you can (and want to) do this or not.

Just an idea... Disclaimer: I think that most people on this list, myself
included, probably haven't made this move, or they wouldn't be here.
