Subject:Re: Now is the winter of our dis-CONTENT From:"Paul Strasser" <paul -dot- strasser -at- windsor-tech -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 20 Nov 2002 08:47:28 -0700
I write the online help, user's guides, and training manuals for: A)
emissions estimations systems used by government and industry to track
pollutants, B) Compliance and Enforcement systems used by government to
track industries in violation of EPA standards, and C) any other project
that my company is working on. It's all related to pollution control. Some
of this software is extremely complex, and content is king - with style
mattering solely as a means to best instruct the user. I also edit the
technical documents (sys docs, DFDs, etc.) produced by our company. This
involves a lot of cat herding - getting programmers here and in Canada to
get data and narratives to me before deadlines so I can make their copy
legible and readable. In this area, I have to rely a little more on the
programmers for content (although I can catch many problems) and am
essentially an editor.
There's also webwork, some marketing, some artwork... it's a small company,
and I wear many hats. Whatever is required is what I'll do. But I'd guess
that it's 70% writing, 25% editing, and 5% catch-all. Over all, it's a
great job.
