Actually, a software independent doc format shouldn't be too hard to come by. I
assume we're talking about pure formatting markup.

In its pure form (when following the published spec), RTF is an open format but
perhaps not easily made to fit the constrains of XML compliant. MIF could
certainly be made XML compliant with very little effort. Then I suppose there's
others as well without having to reinvent the wheel.
