Keith said, "I'm not looking to any organization to do
this for us. To me, this is an individual task."
Keith, I agree with you. Change starts with me, not
with some faceless organization "out there" that I
cannot control. And you're right; employers don't want
PR. But when we technical writers do our jobs
extremely well, employers need to know about it, and
PR strategies are one way of communicating a positive
message.
I wonder what kind of impact STC could have by
organizing a group of technical writers and industry
leaders, giving them ideas and resources to get into
their respective industries to proselytize -- writing
articles, giving speeches, etc. that explain the TW's
role in helping people solve problems. You and I and
everyone on this listserv can write great user manuals
that expertly help our users, but if other companies
don't hear these success stories, they'll always
believe that a secretary or engineer can write
documentation.
