The one tidbit I'll add to the union discussion:
Unionizing would NOT change the fact that right now, a huge number of
companies that typically employ tech writers are in serious trouble.
These are rough times, and not just for tech writers.
It's naive to think that ANY organization - be it the STC or the Tech
Writers Union Local #487 - can change that just by waving a magic wand.
This is NOT a thriving market in which poor tech writers are being
exploited by evil robber-barons. It's an all-around rough patch in the
road, and its impact is being felt from the top to the bottom of these
companies. Everybody's scrambling.
