I'd *strongly* recommend Karen Schriver's "Dynamics in Document Design"
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0471306363/stcinformatde-20).
Chapter 2 is titled "Evolution of the Field" and contains a 50-page
timeline with the following sections:

- education & practice in rhetoric
- professional development
- education & practice in graphic design
- science, technology & environment
- society & consumerism

This is a fabulous book (by one of STC's Associate Fellows).
