TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Dick Margulis reports: <<When I've attempted that solution in the past
[manual numbering], Word has frequently taken it upon itself to decide that
I MUST be creating a numbered list and therefore taken control of the
numbering, in its own inimitable style. This has occurred regardless of what
I had unchecked on the options tab, with those setting mysteriously changing
under control of the MS homunculus, too.>>
This sort of thing used to drive me batty until I discovered the solution
lurking under the Tools-->Autocorrect menu choice. There, you'll find two
tabs that cause endless grief if you don't know how to disable them:
"Autoformat as you type" and "Autoformat". The former makes the changes as
you type; the latter seems to try (occasionally erratically) to make the
specified changes whenever you open a document that contains things such as
numbered lists. Uncheck pretty much everything on these tabs and many weird
behaviors will vanish because Word will no longer be trying to "help" you
with your formatting.
