I've only read a few snippets of the recent copyright thread, but it got me
wondering...

Couldn't you include a clause in a contract stating that you (the writer)
retain the copyright to the material until such time as the client pays the
bill, at which point you provide them a release?

I don't do contract work so this has not been an issue for me. Wouldn't such
a clause protect both the writer and the client?
