Subject:Foreign language PDF unreadable? From:"Hart, Geoff" <Geoff-H -at- MTL -dot- FERIC -dot- CA> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Thu, 19 Dec 2002 09:19:29 -0500
rajni arya reports: <<I received a PDF format paper from Chines author that
seems to have unsupported fonts and, therefore, will not open properly. The
following is the error message I'm given: There was an error processing a
page. The encoding (Cmap)
specified by a font is missing or corrupted.>>
Kind of makes you wonder about this "read PDF on any computer!!!" claim,
doesn't it? <g> As it happens, Adobe does indeed offer a fix, if you're
willing to install it. (Works fine on my Mac; haven't tried it under Windows
because the All-Seeing Network Demons won't let us install any software on
our own. Sigh.) From Adobe's Web site:
"The U.S. English version of Acrobat software contains the fonts and other
resources you need to create, view, and print PDF files that contain
Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese fonts.
However, to create, open, or edit an original document that will be
converted to PDF, you need a native language operating system or an Asian
language kit. To ensure compatibility with PDF files that contain Asian text
fonts, install the following files:
-- If you use Acrobat, install the Asian Language Support files from the
Acrobat CD-ROM.
-- If you use Acrobat Reader, install the free Asian Font Pack files from
Adobe's Web site at
<www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrasianfontpack.html>."
Hope that helps!
