I know that xMetal is an authoring tool, but can it be used to author
help files? I went to the xMetal site and did a LOT of searching with
Google, but didn't have much luck.

I reply:

Yes, it is possible to use XMetaL as the authoring tool for Help
files--that's how the XMetaL Help files themselves are created (I know,
because I am part of the team that creates them). However, it's a
single-sourcing solution (the same XML source is used for the printed
and PDF manuals), not a "one-button" process like RoboHelp. We have a
number of XSLTs and accompanying scripts that we use to transform the
XML to files that Microsoft's HTML Help compiler can understand, and
then we use that program to create our .chm files.

We also have a transformation that we can use to make WebHelp from the
XML source.

If you would like more information, feel free to contact me off-list.
