Agreed, it's something there is only one of, so that you can't choose
among various internets, as you can choose among various trains. But by
that figuring, wouldn't you have to capitalize "air," since you have to
say "the air"?
I certainly hope that you don't take in 'the air' as that wouldn't lerave any for the rest of us ;-)
Air can be partitioned and measured ("the air inside this room", "a cubic foot of air"), so it is not really one entity as the Internet is.
