Re: Is there such a thing as technical fiction?
Hi Techwrlers!
Below is a link to an Internet book called "253 (or Tube Theatre)" by Geoff
Ryman that my colleague received for xmas and showed it to me. Please excuse
me if this has been mentioned on techwrl before.
http://www.ryman-novel.com/
It is not a traiditional "novel", as there doesn't seem to be a well defined
plot or story, and lacks many elements common in novels. It's mostly a
collection of humorous caricatures, and it can be funny at times. What
really caught my attention (TW tie-in!) is that the printed version (more
so than the online version) looks and reads exactly like an instructional
manual. There is even a section in the beginning that's called "How to use
this Novel" or something to that effect, and has a very well thought-out
index.
It raised a few questions for me: Was/is the author a Tech Writer? Is this
the new millenium's incarnation of the Novel? Do non-TWs find this book as
interesting as I do?
Geoff Ryman is mainly a fantasy/science fiction writer. I
read a previous book of his called 253, also an experimental
nove. It was loosely about a train wreck, with snippets about
the different passengers in the different cars by chapter
before the crash. It was entertaining but my interest in the
gimmick wore off about halfway through.
