Abstinence is certainly the only way to enjoy complete security, but then
you're missing out on useful technology. IMHO one must strike a balance
between prudent security precautions and the ability to take advantage of
cool stuff you can do.
My take on it is this: if you're talking about use at home, harden your LAN
or your system against the obvious threats (i.e. disable file sharing,
restrict access to your WiFi network via MAC addy, get a router that allows
for filtering, change default passwords and user IDs, etc.). After that,
don't keep anything on your computer that you don't want others to see. If
you must keep such data on your computer, encrypt it.
And overall, don't fall victim to social engineering: all the security
precautions in the world won't help if you respond to an email supposedly
from your ISP asking you to "verify your username and password by sending
them in the reply to this mail." :)
