That said, if you really want to do this, then secure your box. [snip]Good advice all around, whether you're sharing files or not.
I'd add two more basics:
1. Don't use your root/administrator's account for the Internet. Ever.
2. Use permissions, especially to limit what file-sharers can access.
These two points aren't enough in themselves, by any means. But they should limit the damage or the prying that a curious file-sharer can do on your system. You may lose personal files, but at least the system should be preserved.
And, naturally, everyone has regular backups, so that's not a problem. Right? ;-)
