TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
* The User Manual Manual - which I have used in the past and I and the
students didn't like. Too simplistic and there are more than a few typos.
But there were many votes for it.
* Writing for the Computer Industry by Kristin R. Woolever and Helen M. Loeb
* Designing Visual Language - Charles Kostelnick and David Roberts
* Technical Writing Style - Dan Jones (Professor at University of Central
Florida)
* Technical Communication in the Global Community - Deborah Andrews
* Writing Software Documentation: A Task-Oriented Approach, by Tommy
Barker - many votes.
* How to Communicate Technical Information: A Handbook of Hardware and
Software Documentation, Jonathan Price
* UnTechnical Writing: How to Explain Technical Subjects and Products to
Anyone" by Michael Bremer - which I have used in Intro to Tech writing and
it was only OK. Typos. Not good.
I chose the Barker book, based on the TOC on Amazon. I like this book and am
hoping that the price is offset by the utility inthe long run for my
students. This one seems to cover all the stuff I cover in my classes and
more.
Thanks to all who provided suggestions and thoughts.
