Furthermore, the overwhelming number of security programs written for Windows
suggests that it is actually "easier" to secure a Windows system.

It might, at least as long as you do not consider the work and complexity involved in installing and configuring all these programs.

What it certainly _does_ suggest, however, is that there is an overwhelmingly larger perceived need to secure Windows systems. One possible reason for this is that Windows is significantly less secure than Linux or Mac OS.

And on a practical level, this appears to be true: In how much danger am I when I install a system in anything like a standard configuration? In other words, if you do not take special measures to secure your system, how big is the danger? It seems obvious that the standard installation of Internet Explorer and Outlook alone places Windows users in the greatest danger by far.

In other words, Windows users need to take a lot of steps to get to a level of practical security that other OS' users have out of the box. This could account for the allegedly larger number of security applications for Windows.
