Not wanting to be the sort who never admits he's wrong, I admit
that I might very well be wrong about the doors puzzle.
As the center of the resistance, I feel I owe everybody that.

However, the light came from a cow-orker who approached
the problem from the set of final outcomes and worked backward.

In general, I would have expected more cohesive and
convincing explanations from a pack of technical writers. :-)

Bonnie, however, appears to have provided the most succinct
summary.

I guess that technical writers might have been able to give
more persuasive explanations if somebody had been
able to describe the physics involved.

If anybody wishes to try, please do it offline. I'll be glad to
present the most successful attempt to the list in a single
post. No doubt, Schroedinger's cat will need to figure in
the explanation.
