Yes, I have.
It diminishes readability of smaller fonts. The small fonts
being necessary to get all the text in the same lines as
they appear onscreen...
My stuff is distributed as PDF and as Docutech or in-house
laser-printed books. The background can be a problem
for some readers, onscreen, though it looks nice and crisp
on paper.
I also tried using a pale yellow, instead of grey. That one
is acceptable onscreen, and on some printers, but
totally disappears when printed on other printers.
