TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Once again, I think a lot of you are seeing this issue in a vacuum. Just
because a company does one thing in an interview, does not mean that is the
SOLE method they use to evaluate a potential employee.
For example, I make all applicants take a technical test when they come in for
an interview. The test is to gauge the relative skill level of a candidate with
the technologies that are used at my firm. That test has never been used as the
sole method of evaluating a candidate. Although it has helped me understand a
person better. One of the best writers I ever hired got almost every question
wrong. But his effort to understand those questions said more about him than
the answers.
Its easy to see these single issues like this as monumental problems when taken
individually. Clearly a firm that was only hiring people with perfect credit,
wouldn't have very many viable candidates.
