TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Well . . . never having had this opportunity (although at my last gig I
offered):
1) Talk about why your documentation is cool.
2) Talk about how you design your documentation to be usable.
3) Demonstrate navigation, index, search, and other features of your
documentation. (You'd be surprised how many people ignore these features
because of previous bad experiences or lack of understanding.)
4) Stress the time you put into creating your index and QAing your docs.
5) Explain something cool and helpful you plan to do with your docs in
the future.
6) Explain how customers can give you documentation feedback (e-mail,
whatever).
7) At the beginning of the session pass out your feedback form and
during the session discuss filling it out and collect the responses at
the end of the session.
At the end, do a QA session. Be prepared to take some undeserved
lumps--there is such a thing as a stupid question. But, be prepared to
learn a few things too. And, be further prepared to say, "That's an
excellent point, given the time limits, how about we discuss that after
the session over GTs, next question?"
