In Canada, tech writers can be called upon to prepare corporate technical
writeups for Investment Tax Credits (ITC) under the CCRA's SR&ED program.
(The CCRA is our equivalent to the US' IRS.)

Bear in mind that these tax credits can represent a significant amount of
money, from several hundred thousand dollars to several million. The
technical writeups are a beautiful exercise in technical writing, from
investigation to execution. If you don't mind the pressure and the
challenge, this can give a nice dollar value to your presence in a
company--something tech writers don't usually see.
