There is a grand tradition in business IT consulting that you
always say Yes to new work, and then you go out and cram for the
necessary knowledge. That's how today's ecommerce infrastructure
got built, and got built in Internet time.
It's not just individuals; corporations played this game too.
Circa 1999 most IT consulting companies would say "Yes, we have
capabilities in JavaMeisterBuilder" ... and then, the next day
you would see the consulting firm's desperate job posting
"Immediate need for consultant with experience in
JavaMeisterBuilder!!" If you don't believe me, these job
postings are all conveniently available via Google.
That only works for business systems, though. Harder stuff
probably usually *should* be written by hands-on experts. Maybe
that's the distinction that makes this discussion so endless.
