I always try to avoid using mismatched subject and pronoun.This discussion makes me wonder: when English lost the second person plural in the 17th century, were there people who said that using "you" for a plural subject was a mismatched subject and pronoun? ;-)
Probably not, because our grammar neurosis hadn't set in yet. Still, the language - and the culture - survived that change without too much trauma. Just like "you," "they" is becoming the pronoun for both singular AND plural.
