I'm surprised that no one has yet brought up "one".
I use it quite a bit, to avoid exactly the sort of "I said; it said" arguments that we're seeing here. But, then, I grew up reading Agatha Christie, Thomas Hardy and the Brontes. Like the Shakespearean "they", "one" feels and sounds normal to me.
