Since the initial instruction came from an engineeer to a technical writer,
presumably it wasn't in a farrier's shop either, unless shoeing horses has
become so complex as to require engineeers and technical writers. Although
unstated, I am inferring that it was something inside of (or nearby) a
machine of some sort that blew on or sucked from (i.e., Moved Air) a
component or area to cool, heat, or change the composition of the ambient
gases.

The basic question here is "if it was a fan, what's wrong with calling it a
fan"?
