Following are *some* of the MS Word mouse tricks that I've learned from this list, from other lists, from the Web, and from just fooling around. You may already know these; please feel free to add your favorites! I've only included mouse tricks that work in Word, and I left out some very basic ones (dragging and dropping text, etc.). I also left out a few that work only in Word XP.
ZOOMING
Hold down the Ctrl key and scroll with the mouse wheel to zoom in or out.
SELECTING ANY RECTANGULAR AREA
Hold down the Alt key and use the left mouse button to drag diagonally from the upper left-hand corner to the lower right-hand corner of the area to be selected. If the area includes text only, you can then format the text.
This trick does not work inside tables.
SELECTING A RECTANGLE FROM THE BEGINNING OF A PARAGRAPH
Hold down the Alt key and triple-left-click the lower right-hand corner of the rectangle to be selected.
SELECTING A SENTENCE
Hold down the Ctrl key and left-click anywhere in the sentence.
CUTTING AND PASTING A SELECTION
Select text using any method, and then hold down the Ctrl key and right-click where you want to paste it. I usually combine this trick with the previous trick to cut and paste whole sentences, but it works with any selection.
SELECTING A LONG, CONTIGUOUS TEXT STRING
Left- or right-click one end of the string. Hold down the Shift key and left- or right-click the other end of the string. This works in both directions.
LOCKING MOST OF THE KEYBOARD
Hold down the Alt key and left-click any text.
Certain keys remain unlocked, such as the top row (F1, F2, etc.) and the group of six keys that includes Insert, Home, etc. The Backspace key is not locked, but the Space key is. All number and letter keys are locked, including the numeric keypad.
To unlock the keyboard, click anywhere.
This trick does not work inside tables (instead, it selects the entire clicked column).
