TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I am currently an English major/business minor at TCU, a private
American university. I have a passion for practical technological
applications, and I am currently working on open source documentation
for Slackware Linux. I have a couple of questions.
First, I believe it's important to say that I was
a Computer Science major for a while, but I quit because I had problems
understanding the theoretical applications of my job-such as data
structures and algorithms. Will my lack of technical knowledge hurt me?
What can I do to enhance it while I am still in college? I only have
about a year left, so my options are limited. Do you recommend me take
more technical courses, technical writing courses, get an internship,
or something else?
Second, I'm
debating whether I should get a Masters in Technical Communication
degree from Texas Tech. Has anyone heard of this program and will it be
useful to a person who is new to the tech writing field? It is supposed
to have a high job placement after graduation, which is a plus for me.
But I have many debts, and I'm wondering whether getting the additional
degree's benefits would outweigh the costs.
If I need to give you any more information about my situation, please
let me know.
Thank you,
Morgan Landry
