I don't think it's a question of whether or not it "caused more problems
than it solved". Most people would be faced with a very big problem indeed,
if they didn't have word-processing capability of some sort.
The key question is "does it cause more problems than the alternative(s),
and if so, why do people continue to use it?". And I think the answer is
that they use it because they are told to. In my experience, very little
(if any) critical, comparative evaluation goes into most workers' choice of
a word processing program. The decision is made for them, and whether or
not the chosen program is the best one for their needs seems to rank fairly
low as a selection criterion.
