It seems clear to me that the reason John usually gets results is that he cultivates a relation with the developers. That includes being aware of other demands on their time, and doing reciprocal favors. These are the basics of most decent relations, whether professional or personal, and he takes a common sense approach of working on them. His attitudes are in marked contrast to the chip-on-the-shoulder, "I'm a professional attitude" that many tech-writers seem to have.
