I am more like you are now (and the way I hope you stay). I have been very
successful in my 8 years of technical writing. When I go into an interview, I
see it not only as an opportunity to sell myself, but to find out if the job
I'm applying for would be a good match for me. The people who best know that
are the people already working there. If I tell them the honest truth about
myself, the way I work, the way in interact with people, the type of work I
enjoy doing, and so on, then they're going to be able to tell if I'd be a good
fit. If I BS my way through the interview, then I could quite possibly land the
job and regret having landed it!
I actually had an interviewer lament that she couldn't hire me. She said that I
was a "breath of fresh air," because I was so obviously honest. At least one
other interviewer has commented on my honesty, as well. I'd rather be truthful
and lose a job interview than to be deceitful and win the job.
