Re: Estimating a Project
Does anyone have a "magic" formula for estimating documentation?
You might want to see if you can get your hands on "Estimating Documentation Projects" by Makarand Pandit, Intercom, Nov. 2001. It's worth looking at for its systematic approach and lists of considerations.
Others have contributed many truths. I would only add that, in a large project, whatever speed I gain as I get more familiar with the material, is off-set in some measure by the sheer time consumed by coordinating/managing/reviewing/proofing so that, often, Project A, which is three times as big as Project B, takes more than three times as long. It's also, I think, an article of faith that adding people has its costs as well as its up-side. Your mileage may vary, of course.
Hope that's useful,
J
