TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The STC competitions have lists of criteria that you can review ahead of
time to determine how closely your publication might meet the judging
standards. I have found that publications which match the "formula" do very
well. However, something innovative or off the wall is far less likely to be
successful in competition, no matter how effective it is, because it doesn't
fit the criteria.
The quality of judging is always a concern. A few years ago, a judge told me
that she really enjoyed judging the multimedia stuff because she didn't know
much about multimedia and consequently learned a great deal. Uh-huh.

I do wholeheartedly believe that any entry into the
STC competition has to be created from the outset with
the STC judges formally in mind as an audience.
